BTE: Behind the ear

The traditional over the ear hearing aid, with a tube running down to either a soft or hard earmould fitted in the ear.



Benefits:

• They are easier to keep clean as the electronic components are away from moisture and wax.
• They can give more power as the microphone is further away from the speaker (receiver) outlet, than in an in the ear product. They are also less prone to feedback.
• As the casing is bigger, they can be fitted more easily with directional microphones.
• They usually use larger batteries, and therefore drain batteries less.
• They do tend to have a longer life, and when an earmould wears out, it can be replaced without having the electronics replaced as in and in-the ear product.
• They have bigger controls, and many people find them easier to use.

Receiver in the Canal Aids

Tend to be incredibly small, and discreet, they also allow a very clear un-occluded sound for the patient. Lightweight, coupled with cosmetics and sound quality make these types of aids the most popular by model over the last few years.
