Clinical Ear Care

Although the ear has a natural mechanism for the removal of wax it is recognised that certain people do experience problems with accumulation of excess wax that may require irrigation. Factors such as narrow, hairy or obstructed ear canals, hearing aid or earplug use, as well as dusty/dirty occupations all contribute to a build-up of earwax and using cotton buds only serves to push the debris back in further, often impacting the wax in the process.

This can give rise to deafness, tinnitus, vertigo, pain and or discharge. Honiton Hearing centre offer both ear irrigation and Microsuction, either technique used alone or as part of a wax removal treatment to relieve these symptoms is an invasive procedure, with the potential to cause discomfort or injury and must therefore be treated with care by a trained specialist. Having this excess material removed by a hearing professional can restore a person's hearing dramatically.

Colin Eaton the Audiologist at Honiton Hearing Centre explains, "I trained at Aston University in Birmingham, specifically to carry out this procedure using a modern Propulse irrigation machine, and have recently trained further to cover the microsuction technique, we also carry out safe manual procedures." "We normally soften the wax and dry skin with olive oil for 7-10 days first; sometimes this is sufficient to break it down completely."

We then check your ears for wax using a video otoscope so you can see on screen exactly what we are doing.

"It's not just an age related issue," Colin adds. "People who also use hearing instruments, I-pods and mobile phone ear-buds, all produce more wax, and a significant build up can affect the technology that is being used."
